Review: Canon Powershot S5 IS

Canon Powershot S5 ISThe Canon PowerShot S5 IS is unquestionably the most versatile digital camera on the market, with a powerful high quality zoom lens, superb image stabilisation, class-leading performance and what may be the best AF system on the market. The Canon PowerShot S5 IS has a huge range of features, including a video mode with full zoom lens and stereo audio. A magnificent 12x optical zoom lens with Ultrasonic motor (USM) for smooth, noiseless operation incorporates Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer technology to significantly reduce the effects of camera shake.

The Image quality of the Canon PowerShot S5 IS is generally good but only at low ISO settings. At ISO 400 and beyond, the S5 produces images with very high noise levels. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen to help vanquish red-eye, once and for all. Face Detection AF/AE/FE automatically detects up to nine faces within a scene and optimises focus, exposure and flash output accordingly. The system performs accurately with large groups and when subjects are distant or move within the frame.Because most images will no longer require laborious post-processing with a computer, the new in-camera Red-eye Correction feature is ideal for direct printing. Image file sizes are large for an 8MP camera, averaging around 4.3MB at maximum quality and resolution, which means very little image compression, but also means that a 1GB SD card is enough for 286 shots.
